New York Times: “Connecticut Ruling Overturns Ban on Same-Sex Marriage“:
In his majority opinion, Justice Richard N. Palmer wrote that the court found that the “segregation of heterosexual and homosexual couples into separate institutions constitutes a cognizable harm,” in light of “the history of pernicious discrimination faced by gay men and lesbians, and because the institution of marriage carries with it a status and significance that the newly created classification of civil unions does not embody.”
The court also found that “the state had failed to provide sufficient justification for excluding same-sex couples from the institution of marriage.”
Let’s hope, when the backlash lashes back over there, we can send them some winning strategy from California. It is ALL HANDS ON DECK time over here, steady hand to the tiller time, EVERY SHOULDER AND HEART LEANING INTO THE TASK.
Ooops. I let loose with the all caps again. There just miiiiight be a bit more of that in the coming month.
* Update: Yep. Quel suprise. A November challenge now in Conneticut, too.
I can’t tell you how happy Jess and I are! 🙂
Good luck on Prop 8… all our good luck vibes your way!
I’m thinking it’s like how you felt when you said, I’s Married Now! I Said I’s Married Now!”, but times a million. Give or take a bit.
Lordy LORD I wish I would be feelin’ that on Nov 5.
If you haven’t blasted everyone you know with a plea to support the cause over here, can you include a link in all your congratulations we did it emails? (Every dollar gets us closer to a fair fight with the Mormon Money Machine, which is doing everything humanly possible to run our state, so far as I can tell. Do I have anything against Mormon folks? No, not at all. I have hugged and spoken at length with known LDS folks, count ’em my friends. Do I have anything against their wiping away the separation between church and state, setting themselves up as moral arbitors, and removing me and my family’s civil rights protections? DAMN STRAIGHT I DO.)

LOL!! Thanks for that! 🙂
Are ya kiddin’ me? Every Prop. 8 post your make is shared in my google reader since you started them… In fact everyone’s is…
We’ve even made a meager contribution.
We wish you all the best and hope that equality wins out.
Hugs from one of the other two marriage states! 🙂
Tina
Good news indeed. I just made a contribution to No on 8 in its honor.
THANK YOU! What a fabulous idea.
“Love the justice in Conneticut? Help keep it shining in California!”

Awesome news 🙂 shame about the November challenge. Im in the UK but it all counts as one step further!
I got a call this morning from Doctors Without Borders. “Sorry,” I said, all my donations right now are going to Obama and to the No on 8 folks in California.”
The woman asked me, “What’s up with No on 8? Which side is which?” She’s been meaning to look it up because she’s in California and will be voting. We talked for 15 minutes about which side is which, and about anti-miscegenation laws of yore (she’s African American; my grandparents are an inter-racial couple), and at the end of the call she thanked me for clarifying, and said she’ll spread the word among friends: NO ON 8!
Thank you sister Reno, writing to us from the great former swing state of Nevada!
One of the odd things about this (for those who aren’t eyeball-deep in it all, like us) is that a “NO” vote is actually the positive, love-affirming thing to do. “No” sounds so negative, doesn’t it.
Of course, also, the thing that’s so big here is that the proposition is aiming to TAKE AWAY an extant right, rather than actually conferring it in the first place. Kind of a novel position.
Wow. This is all so wonderful! Rock on Connecticut! This is so exciting. It is strange how it happens in wave. We had that explosion of places legalizing (comparatively) in 2005 (Mass, Belgium, Spain, Canada) and it looks like this is going to be the second wave.
On the home front: My mother went on a wee tirade in her class (MBA) about prop 8 today. She started the tirade by talking about the economy and her monetarily-challenged daughter and ended the tirade with “So vote NO on prop.8 and help my daughter and daughter-in-law keep their marriage legal!” In this case scare tactics don’t bother me one bit. She called me on her way home from class saying “and if anyone complains to the business school, they can bring it on!” I guess she has the whole I-could-be-your-grandmother-but-could-still-run-circles-around-you thing going for her. People tend to do what she says.
“I-could-be-your-grandmother-but-could-still-run-circles-around-you.” Probably one of my favorite kinds of people.
Our wee son always calls out “Go ‘Bama!” whenever he sees the Obama/Biden button on Mama’s purse. Now I’m thinkin, “Go Gramma!”
