Her first Amahl, Berkeley, CA.
Auntie and Mama flank her as they sing Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors, the family’s holiday staple, with Grampy on the keyboards. Though she’s adored it for years, this time, the girlie is reading the words herself, and finding them in the score, staff after staff.  A Christmas miracle, indeed.
(Wee sliver, here, of Amahl’s sweet song to his mother — it was commissioned by NBC and premiered in the television broadcast from which that wee sliver is sliced.)
Yay for the sweet miracle that is learning to read and learning to read music! Amahl is one of my very favorites too. I look forward to singing it one day with my children as well. Enjoy this beautiful season!
Thank you! The amazing thing is, I don’t read music (of course her Ma does). So I’m watching her develop a literacy I don’t have. Wonderful.
And I’ll tell you: nothing like the sound of a child soprano singin’ that Amahl part. You’re gonna love it. 🙂
